Twenty-Year Veteran of Lighting Industry Revives Outdoor Line with Functional, Contemporary Designs
Grafton, WI (May 2009)
Shady Lady Lighting is adding to well-established classic favorites with a new division of contemporary outdoor lighting targeted toward both contract and retail markets. Oasis Outdoor Lighting, as the new line is called, consists of products made exclusively with Viro all-weather wicker and assembled in Grafton, WI, USA.

“The idea for the Oasis Line began while I was vacationing in Mexico and noticed that many resorts lacked outdoor ambiance, especially in the evening after guests were finished with swimming and were looking to relax in an outdoor oasis,” says Andy Morter, Shady Lady VP of Merchandising. The designs materialized almost immediately, and once home, Morter began developing the line.

“As the products came together I realized the features and benefits extended beyond the creative elements,” said Morter. “Because the line is assembled in our Wisconsin headquarters, Shady Lady’s talented workforce can customize outdoor products with different mounting applications, hardwire or portable wiring and a variety of powder coat options for bases and other components.” All internal elements for these products are made of high quality aluminum and assembled in the USA.

Oasis products are woven exclusively with Viro, an environmentally friendly and superior quality synthetic fiber that is 100% HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), which means it is non-toxic and recyclable and does not contain any plasticizer, unlike PVC. Some of the characteristics of this fiber are its high flexibility and tensile strength, as well as UV and weather resistance. This synthetic fiber is completely colored throughout, smudge proof, and resistant to temperature differences.

Shady Lady will be doing a soft introduction of Oasis Outdoor Lighting at the HD expo in Las Vegas. These new products can be found inside Viro’s booth, # 8532. “I am thrilled to be at this event, and look forward to showing and working with designers to help light up their outdoor spaces,” says Morter.

Oasis Line

Yin Yang: Yin and yang are complementary opposites within a greater whole. The Yin Yang Collection from Oasis is a combination of organic and geometric shapes working as one. The outer shell is woven with both round and flat Golden Crown Viro. The round Viro is used on the neck and woven tightly to create almost solid coverage while the bottom uses flat Viro in an open weave pattern to let light shine through. Inside the organic shaped shell is a weather proof sphere which houses the electrical assembly. Ambiance can be customized with bulb use; a standard white bulb will give off a soft white glow or for a warm amber glow, use a yellow bulb. Available in small, large, pendant, and wall sconce versions; hardwire or portable.

phatty: The Phatty Collection revolves around a new extra fat 8mm extrusion from Viro. This cutting-edge material is now being used for transitional looking outdoor furniture. “I realized the opportunity with this material when I first saw a piece of furniture woven out of it. The gaps left (or negative space) in between strands are larger than normal because of the large diameter wicker”, explains Morter. “These gaps created a new opportunity to have a solid woven object utilized as a light.” A few of the pieces in this collection are unique in that they double as end tables but are functional as individual lighting pieces as well. Available in pendant, ground and post lamps.

Buca: The natural looking Viro used in this collection is inspired by the woven art of basketry from Tuscany. “The actual lamp shape was inspired by the look of a bottle of Chianti I saw at one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Milwaukee,” said Morter. The large and small bottle shapes can be wired for ground lamps, pendants or even lamp/shade combinations featuring drum shades with Sunbrella fabrics. Another feature of these lamps is the inner shade diffuser made of outdoor fabric. This diffuser helps disperse the light evenly throughout the lamp, giving off an all over ambient glow.
